Good Design: Scholz and Friends

17 May

via here and here

I stumbled across Scholz & Friends while looking over Lovely Package’s recap of the 2012 D&AD Awards Packaging Design Winners, and after playing around their site (which I never translated from German so I kind of just clicked things) I fell hard for their ear bud and ear plug packaging. Playing off of a simple music note and a volume control button, Scholz and Friends created two beautiful package designs that utilize a common every day item/symbol and transcend it to something entirely unique and special.

Craving: Tibor Kalman Umbrella

16 May

Found on Apt 34 from MoMA

Although it apparently doesn’t really rain much in Colorado, (unlike Georgia where it rains all. the. time. including right now*) but that doesn’t stop me from wanting this super cute umbrella from the MoMA store. I saw it over on Erin’s blog and it’s been on my mind ever since. How nice would it be to look up and see a beautiful sunny sky when everything around you is actually dreary and wet? It’d be like the opposite of having a rain cloud follow you around.

*This post was written previously so it may actually be raining as you read this. Or it may be beautiful.

From the Studio: Heading West

15 May

view from our last road trip out west via personal collection

My camera is packed so I can’t show any fun “can you believe we fit this many boxes in one truck” photos, but I wanted to stop in to let you all know that 1) I haven’t fallen off the edge of the world 2) I promise I’ll get back to regular posting in a few days and 3) holy cow. We move THIS SATURDAY.

These past few weeks have kind of been a whirlwind, and this past week was busier than I could have ever imagined. J had his hooding ceremony last Friday (he actually won an award as well which was awesome) graduation was Saturday, his graduation/our going away party was Saturday night (beyond heart warming to see so many people there to say congrats and bye) then Mother’s Day was Sunday (the in laws were in town so I made brunch among the boxes,) Monday was moving day (which went surprisingly well if you don’t count J getting attacked by the loading ramp. He is now sporting a horribly 6 inch bruise/cut thing) and today was filled with locking up the truck to be picked up, lunch with friends, spackling walls and cleaning. A lot of cleaning.

Despite the craziness, we are so so so excited to be heading to Denver and can’t wait to start this new adventure. It’s always hard to say goodbye, but given how much our family and friends love to travel (and ski,) we’re not too worried about keeping in touch. To be honest, we’ve already had to start writing down who is coming when just to make sure we don’t “double book.”

All that said, I’ll be checking out until next week (minus one or two scheduled posts) to focus on visiting with family and friends, wrapping up loose ends, and taking all of this in. Thanks again for all of the encouragement and well wishes you all have sent our way- it means a lot. See you once we’re in Denver!

Good Design: Barcelona city planning

10 May

Eixample via here

A little different from my other good designs, but when I came across this aerial shot of Barcelona’s district, Eixample, I couldn’t help but be amazed by the clean lines and perfectly arranged streets and really wanted to share it with you all.

From the site:

“Constructed in the early 20th century, Eixample is a district of the Spanish city of Barcelona known for the urban planning that divided the district into octagonal blocks. Influenced by a range of schools of architecture, Eixample was designed in a grid pattern with long streets, wide avenues, and rounded street corners. Despite being in the center of a thriving European metropolis, the district provides improved living conditions for inhabitants including extensive sun light, improved ventilation, and more open green space for public use.”

Isn’t that awesome? EACH little octagon has a central hub and is set up just to make life better for those who live there. I love that idea.

Craving: Silver Tea Kettle

9 May

via sur la table

I don’t drink coffee (I know, I know. It’s weird to most of you) but I do love tea. Actually, I love a few specific teas- and they have to be hot. That’s right, I was born and raised in the South and I can’t stand cold sweet tea. Seriously, it tastes like dirt to me.

But I digress.

Sick of being the out cast when everyone was relaxing with their hot cup of joe, I started trying teas and finally fell in love with a chamomile, honey, blend of some sort. Between my tea drinking and my husbands love of coffee (which he makes using a french press) our tea kettle has seen way better days and is up for a replacement. I couldn’t find one I liked that wasn’t less than $150 (surprise) until this one. I love the simplicity of it, that it’s silver, that it has a large top, and that it doesn’t rust. All pretty good things, right?

Maybe I’ll pick one up after we move.

happy (cinco de mayo) weekend!

Hello everyone! First off, thank you all for you amazing comments yesterday. You all are absolutely wonderful! Second off, I had my very first in home massage today (as in, they come to your home and you don’t have to do anything besides be pampered) and dear goodness it was amazing. I’m completely hooked. (If you’re in Atlanta, I’d recommend Stephen at Metta Station. He rocked.) Another thing I’m hooked on? Genifique by Lancome. My sister told me to try it (she uses it) and now my skin is soft, dewy, and smells awesome. (If you want to try it, I’d recommend going by Dillard’s this weekend because Lancome has their gift with purchase going on until Sunday.) Also, if you were curious as to why posts were light this week, we actually ran off to Florida for the week to see J’s family and get in some beach time before we move out West. It was so nice to take a break from the stress of moving, my dad being in the hospital (he’s doing much much better now. thanks for all of the well wishes!) and just work in general. Now we’re both well rested, loosened up and ready for what’s to come!

And now on to the links.

By far the prettiest candle arrangement ever.

I love the gold duck

I think I need a hanging daybed.

We have a wedding tomorrow (so excited for these two) and I can’t lie. I’d be stoked if it was a taco party.

And in case you missed it, I love this collaboration/concept. (My post went up yesterday!)

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!!

Things I’m Afraid to Tell You

3 May

via creature comforts

I’ve been lectured by strangers, been accused of being a broken woman, and been told I’ll never understand what true love is, all because of a decision my husband and I made after many (many) discussions. And while our family and friends already know (and for the most part accept our decision even if they don’t all fully understand,) it still never fails to surprise me how harsh we’re usually treated whenever someone new hears it. So when Ez sent me an email about a blog concept entitled “Things I’m Afraid to Tell You*,” I knew exactly what I wanted to write about.

I just wasn’t sure I had the courage to actually share it with you all because I wasn’t sure how you’d would react.

You see, my husband and I made the decision not to have children. (And for all curious, yes we discussed this before marriage.)

I know we are not the only couple who has ever made this decision (I actually have friends and family members who have made the same one) but it seemed any time we’d tell someone, we were looked at like some kind of freaks. People didn’t understand why we’d choose that and many seemed really angry with us. They assumed that our decision meant we hated kids, that we didn’t think other people should have kids, or that we wouldn’t be happy for them if/when they had children of their own-all of which are completely untrue. (We’re actually really excited to throw showers and then spoil the crap out of our nieces or nephews- whether they are blood related or simply linked by love.)

And despite being completely secure in our decision, it’s still hard to have a stranger (or someone close to you) say that you and your husband are making a huge mistake, that we’ll change our minds (which side note, pretty much means that you don’t think the person is capable of making decisions or that you’ll gloat if they ever did change their minds) or interrogate us like we’d broken some kind of unwritten law.

But looking back, I’m actually really grateful for having experienced it (and I guess, continuing to experience it.) It’s made me a stronger and more secure person, it’s further strengthened my marriage, and it’s taught me that not everyone will like what you do, who you are, or what you stand for, but that in the end you still have to be true to yourself. Which is exactly why I decided to share this with you all. Because whether you’ve been in my exact situation or just in a situation where you maybe felt attacked, judged or alone for following your heart, I wanted you to know you’re not alone in the feeling. We’ve all been there to some extent.

Thanks for letting me share you guys and don’t forget to go check out what everyone else wrote about too.

*The concept of “Things I’m Afraid to Tell You” was inspired by this Jess LC’s post, and you can read more about the it on Ez’s blog after 1pm EST today, but the basic idea is to show a more realistic look into our lives- instead of the perfected versions that are often portrayed on the internet. The lives where our laundry isn’t always folded and color coordinated, dinners aren’t always spectacular and styled, and where we’re met with real situations that aren’t all rainbows and glitter.)

Good Design: din-ink utensils

While I’m on a Bic kick, I thought I’d share these with you too. Once again taking a very common place item, the Bic pen, and transforming it to have a completely new purpose. (Oh, and they are 100% biodegradable and incredibly heat resistant.) Kind of puts a more fun twist on working through lunch, right?

Craving: Torre and Tagus Retro Flip Clock

Isn’t this clock awesome?! I love that it flips.

happy (almost May) weekend!

This week has been a doozy. Between my dad having surgery (he’s doing well which is beyond wonderful) and today being J’s VERY LAST DAY of pharmacy school, (it still hasn’t sunk in) I’ve been experiencing a lot of emotions. Most of all though has been gratitude. Gratitude my dad’s okay, gratitude we’ve made it through 4 years of a doctorate program and get to move to Colorado, gratitude for having such an caring and supportive husband, gratitude for our spectacular friends and family… it’s all really amazing and a little overwhelming. (In a good way; at times I feel like my heart is going to burst!)

So with all that has been going on this week, I hope you’ll understand why I don’t have anything to share link-wise today. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you Monday!
